Quilt Size/Price Calculation

The cost of machine quilting is based on the area of the quilt top in square feet. Use the following formula to calculate the area of your quilt:

  • Measure the length and width of your quilt top in inches.
  • Multiply the length by the width.
  • Divide that figure by 144 to get square feet.
  • Multiply the size in square feet by the cost.

The example below shows how to calculate the approximate cost of quilt that measures 48 inches by 60 inches.

Please note this is provided only as an example. The actual cost will be determined by the complexity of the design chosen and the amount of work involved.

Quilt Preparation

Before we can work on your quilt, it needs to be made "machine ready". The checklist below specifies exactly what we require. If you need any advice or assistance, please contact us.

  • Backing and wadding should be cut 6" - 8" longer and wider than the quilt top i.e. 3" - 4" each side, and each end.

  • All edges of quilt top, wadding and backing are to be trimmed straight and squared.

  • Quilt top and backing to be ironed with seams pressed flat and in the direction you desire.

  • Secure all seams that run to the edge of the quilt, this prevents them from pulling apart and distorting borders when the quilt is mounted on the quilting frame. If possible sew a 'stay stitch' seam around the outer edge of your quilt top within the seam allowance.

  • Trim all loose threads, front and back, dark threads on the back may show through light coloured patches in your quilt.

  • Do not pin or baste your layers together, this is not required.

  • Indicate the head of the quilt top and backing if applicable.

We can provide all or part of this preparation service for a reasonable hourly fee.
